Time to Move Those Clothes!

Its that time of year, the weather is changing and it's time to move the summer clothes to storage and bring the winter clothes to the closet. Or if you have the luxury of storing all your clothes in one space, perhaps it's time to move summer clothes to the back and winter clothes to the front. Unless you are born with the organizing gene, you might be a little clueless as to what to do or how to get started. I would love to give a few strategies to get you going, and wish you luck on what should turn out to be an organized space with functunality and personality.

First things first, you must purge! You only have space for so many clothes. You have to go through your closet on a regular basis and remove anything you have grown out of, don't wear, don't like anymore, whatever. It creates room for new things, don't worry! But for now it most importantly frees up space. Bag it up and donate it.

Next step is dismantle. Remove the bulk of the items in the closet if possible. Starting with a blank slate will help decide what is going where, what works the best for your lifestyle and what you want it to look like. Once you have decided what is going to go where, start with hanging items, but with more detailed of a plan. Categories to start with: pants, shirts, sweaters, dresses. Then break that down by color, length, etc. Hang everything in the same direction and if possible use all the same type of hangers.

Once everything has been hung, depending on how much room you have left, make a plan for items that must be folded. This is where you can play with your creativity and use bins or baskets, drawers or hooks to store things like belts, jeans, tshirts, scarves, socks, etc. If you aren't the best at folding neatly, use bins or baskets to hide the items. Use shelves for storing the bins or baskets, or use floor space that is not being used, and use shelves for shoes. The options are limitless! Take your time to create a welcoming and organized space that allows you to see what you have, easily access what you need and allow you to feel relaxed and possibly even happy about deciding what to wear every day.

Before you start, take the time to research some ideas of what you want it to look like, and use that image as a template to guide you through the process. Happy Organizing!

  1. Very nice article! Storing all your clothes in one space is so hard. It takes so much time and efforts. I am using the house cleaning services of a domestic company and for this task I always take help from my cleaners.
